BIZANTINE "HIP HOP" MOSAIC

by MANNY VEGA About the Artist   Resume

I have been creating public art projects as an artistic expression for the past 33 years. The inspiration comes from a very unique "mestizo" exsistence here in New York City, where I have been active in expressing the cultural and historical imagery of the "Afro Diaspora" that flourishes here in neighborhoods like East Harlem, the South Bronx, San Juan , Havana, and Salvador, Bahia in Brazil.

In the last ten years, I have been intrigued by Eastern European Mosaics, especially as "Spiritual Icons" that are commisioned by families to be shared as hierloom treasures, which are handed down from generation to generation. I feel a special privalege in creating works of art that serve to express the "spirituality" of a community.

I have developed a unique style with this medium, working with traditional Bizantine technique and modern "urban " themes. I enjoy using subjects that express our rich cultural diversity , as well as prominent historical subjects, such as "Julia De Burgos" and Beny More.

I believe in the concept of "permanence" with these mosaics. I believe that they serve as an "information bank" for future generations, most important to me is that I just love the hard work. It's a real romance.
